Animal husbandry - the agricultural practice of breeding and raising livestock, is also known as animal science, stockbreeding or simply, husbandry. In addition to supplying milk, meat, eggs, and hides, animals such as mainly bullocks are the major source of power for both farmers and drayers.
Importantly, in an agricultural country like India, animal husbandry plays an important role in the rural economy, where a large number of farmers depend on animal husbandry for their livelihood.
India has been in the news, attracting foreign investors with good returns, booming markets and expanding economy. Like other sectors, the trusty chick is chirping ahead. Demand for eggs and broilers is picking up. The Government of India recognizes the importance of poultry for not only for enhancing nutrition, but also providing employment.
In recent years, commercial farms have grown in size and sophistication due to the availability of newer breeding and processing technologies. New projects for processing of eggs and broilers are in various stages of implementation. NRIs too have shown interest in investing in various poultry projects. Poultry also holds promise for exports. "Go global; act local" is the message of the day. The success of the poultry industry in India speaks volumes when India hosted the XX World's Poultry Congress in 1996. The poultry industry in India is all set for a gigantic wave of growth.
